Hazy on the Details: September, 2017

September’s a quirky month—in theory everyone’s returned from their summer vacations and back down to serious work. Kids are back in school, summer’s over, Costco introduces Christmas (shudder) and Halloween’s a’comin. However, for me, it’s another couple months of yucky summer heat and the welcome back to horrible fall commuter traffic (summer traffic is so much better!) My summer music ...

Mile Marker: September, 2017

In 2000 I had the pleasure of sitting with Bill Werner and Vaughn Beals when they were inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. They are legends in the world of Harley-Davidson history, and it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. This year Bill Werner, who built and tuned XR750s that won more AMA Grand National Championships and races than any ...

Texas Raine: September, 2017

As the month of July hit Texas it brought our annual ration of triple-digit temperatures along with the sad news that two long-time motorcycle events were being shelved for the time being and I’m going to address the easiest one first. The Roar by the Shore BikeFest has been an annual event down south along the Gulf Coast when it ...

Northeast Passages: September, 2017

Rave reviews came with a recent report to me from road captain Jim Kelly that Big Nick’s Ride for Cape Cod’s Fallen, Saturday and Sunday, July 22–23, was one huge Godzilla of a Massachusetts good time. On Saturday, the second annual “Livin’ the Dream” poker run drew throngs. Saturday evening’s pre-ride party at Cape Cod Irish Village in Yarmouth was ...

Please exercise caution when interpreting or applying what I am about to tell you. If you feel the need to carry a weapon while on a road trip (or any other time or circumstance), there are a few states wherein it is relatively easy to get a permit to carry either concealed or open. Arizona is the closest state to ...

Chewin’ the Fat Boy: August, 2017

Summer doesn’t seem like it’s game-on until the first wienie, the first barbecue, the choke of smoke rising from a grill or open fire. So, any event that ends on the beach, with wienies and burgers (for your kind donation), well, who’d want to miss that? The trick with a lot of things that don’t grade as top dietary drawer, ...

Tan Lines: August, 2017

I have often said that bikers are the best people in the world, not all maybe, but most of us. A good friend of mine was riding from Florida to California to see family. He stopped in San Antonio to gas up and grab a bite to eat. Unfortunately, when he was ready to go, his bike wasn’t. After checking ...

If You See Kay: August, 2017

Get well wishes are for Pervis Leewright from Fairfield. He is currently in the Veterans Hospital in Martinez where he celebrated his 80th birthday. I suppose all good things must come to an end. Obviously, Pervis isn’t riding anymore. However, he passed his Harley on to his son, Dave. Dave, may you have many years of sun in your face ...

Northeast Passages: July, 2017

The Boston Motorcycle Marathon Ride to help fight cancer is set for Sunday, August 13, along the route of the Boston Marathon—Hopkinton to Boston. Last year, some 3,000 people on 1,528 bikes attended. Ride founder Fred Georgoulis, owner of a 1991 FXRS, honors through the run those killed or injured in the marathon bombing of 2013. He told me by ...
